How to Easily Remove the BIOS Setup Password

The BIOS , also known as the system BIOS or ROM BIOS, is the first software run by a PC when it’s powered on. BIOS are used to detect and test the internal hardware components and to load the OS or other programs from a mass storage device. As BIOS is one of the most sensitive areas of computer, some computer manufactures lock the BIOS with a password. But sometimes modification in the BIOS area becomes necessary, in such case one need to remove the BIOS password.

In this article will shall let you know how to remove the BIOS setup password in your PC.  Removing the CMOS battery is the simplest way to remove the BIOS password. Computer remembers its internal configuration even when it is unplugged, because these parts are powered by the CMOS battery. If you remove the battery from the computer, it will forget many of its hardware settings, including the BIOS password. Here is a step by step guide to remove the CMOS battery from a computer.

Removing the BIOS Password
  1. Unplug the computer and all its attachments.
  2. Open up the computer case using a screw driver.
  3. Find out the flat, circular and metallic CMOS battery. This may be lying flat on the motherboard or upright in some units.
  4. Remove the battery with a flat headed screw driver. Be careful, else you might scratch or damage the battery.
  5. After taking out the CMOS battery, wait for 25 minutes before putting it back. Because the computer can still store power in its capacitors even though everything is unplugged.
  6. Replace the battery after the allotted time and re-attach the casing to the unit.
  7. To make sure that the BIOS password is successfully removed, reconnect all the devices to the computer, plug it in and reboot it.
  8. If the steps followed were successful then the BIOS password should no longer be on the system.
  9. Sometimes an error message may occure during bootup. If it happens, you need to go to Load BIOS Defaults in BIOS and save the changes to fix them.

Warning: The above steps should not be performed on Laptops, unless you may experience enough difficulty to work with laptop hardware.
