MG Motor India has announced the name of their forthcoming electric vehicle, the Comet. The name pays homage to the 1934 British airplane that took part in the England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race. Previously, the vehicle was referred to as the MG Air EV and was speculated to debut at the Auto Expo 2023. However, the Comet EV will soon launch in the Indian market.
MG Motor India’s President and Managing Director, Rajeev Chaba, commented that the company is committed to creating solutions for a better future, which includes embracing clean mobility. Their current portfolio includes the Hector SUV, named after a World War II fighter British biplane, and the Gloster, named after a prototype jet-engine aircraft made in Britain.
The MG Comet EV will be the smallest hatchback in India, with a length of 2.9 meters, shorter than the Maruti Suzuki Alto and Tata Nano. Like the global-spec MG Air, the vehicle will have two battery options: 20 kWh and 25 kWh, and the electric motor is expected to generate a peak power of 40 bhp. The range is estimated to be around 150 km on a full charge.
The MG Comet will have a tonne of features inside. Together with other high-end amenities like linked car technology, dual-tone interiors with high-quality materials, voice controls, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and potentially even a sunroof, a dual-screen infotainment setup consisting of two 10.25-inch screens is anticipated. MG hasn’t yet made any interior photos public, though.
The expected price of the MG Comet EV is between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh in the Indian market (both prices are ex-showroom). With this upcoming launch, MG Motor India is making strides towards sustainable transportation and providing consumers with more options for eco-friendly vehicles.
