Google likely to phase out ChromeOS by 2034, court document provides proof!

If reports are to be believed, we might soon see the death of Google ChromeOS as it is all set to be phased out. Let’s read on to know more about the ChromeOS phase out. An Google official document has an announcement in this regard and reads as follows, “Starting in July 2025, Chrome app support is being phased out in stages and reaches end of life in October 2028. Chrome apps in kiosk mode will be deprecated after ChromeOS version 150.”

It further says, “Certain Chrome apps will remain available to user sessions, managed guest sessions, and kiosk mode until ChromeOS version 168.” It then informs, “Developers are advised to make the transition to modern web technologies.”

Phase Out ChromeOS

The official support page of Google has given step-by-step instructions on how to go about the process effect the ChromeOS phase out.

Google say, “If you have configured Chrome apps in your organization, at the top of the Apps and extensions page in your Google Admin console, you’ll see a notification banner letting you know that Chrome apps will no longer be supported.”

Further it adds, “You’ll only see the banner if at least one Chrome app is force-installed, allowed, or blocked for your entire organization. You can use your Google Admin console to delete Chrome apps from user devices. The next time users sign in to their ChromeOS device, the app and its associated user data are removed.”

What The Court Document Says

It is likely that ChromeOS is migrating to the Android stack (codenamed ‘Aluminium’). Here is what the court document says on the matter, “Google is currently working on a project to update ChromeOS to be built in part on the Android operating system (“Project Aluminium”), but a commercially available product will not be released for years.”

The Document further reads, (the) “fastest path” to market estimates initial availability to commercial trusted testers in late 2026 and full release, including to enterprise and education sectors, in 2028).”

Even when the new OS that runs Chromebooks becomes available, it will not be compatible with all existing Chromebook hardware, requiring Google to maintain existing ChromeOS at least through 2033 to meet its “10 year support commitment” to existing users. (“timeline to phase out ChromeOS is 2034,” which is in part “regulation-imposed” because “jurisdictions have various rules for how long a device must be supported”)

It is worth mentioning here that, Google will and has promised support for devices for 10 years, “”10 year support commitment” to existing users. So we have to wait and watch how the transformation will affect present users.
