6 Year Old spends 11 lakh Purchasing Games, Company Refuses to Refund

These days, almost all gadgets support Parental Control Feature, but parents never use this feature until and unless they suffer a major drawback. One such incidents has recently happened in New York, where a 6 year old has spent 11 lakh rupees from her mother’s account by purchasing games from iPad.

Jessica Johnson of Wilton City ended up paying around $16000 (almost 11 lakh in INR) to Apple which she thought to be fraudulent and hence filed a fraud case. But  after investigation it was revealed that the transactions were genuine as Jesica’s 6 year Old son Gorge had spent the amount purchasing in-app features for the iPad version of Sega’s Sonic Forces.

On contact to Apple, the company provided a list of the purchases made starting from July for which a series of withdrawals were made using a credit card and thus Jessica ended up paying such a huge amount unknowingly. Later she also confessed that she had not taken any precaution before handing over her iPad to her son, in fact she was not aware of the parental controls.

However, Apple refused to refund her the amount as the claim was made 60 days after the charge and Jessica names it a predatory attempt by Apple to encourage the young users to spend more.  “What grownup would spend $100 on a chest of virtual gold coins?” she asked. Worth mentioning that the withdrawals made for the purchases ranged from $1.99 to $99.99 for bundles.

So before ending up we would definitely suggest you to activate all parental controls given on your gadgets before handing it over to your child. Else, you might face similar issues some day.
