Why iPhone is so expensive in India, Know the background factor

Almost all models of iPhone these days are assembled in India for which there is no import tax. But parts of iPhones are still imported and hence 18 percent GST is imposed on the parts.

Of late, Apple has launched the iPhone 13 series. iPhone 13 series is the costliest series from Apple. While the 128GB variant of iPhone 13 Mini (the cheapest of iPhone 13 series) costs Rs.69,900, the 1TB variant of iPhone 13 Max Pro (the most expensive of iPhone 13 series) costs Rs. 1,79,000. In between comes the other variants i.e. the iPhone 13 Max Pro 128GB, iPhone 13 Max Pro 256GB and the iPhone 13 Max Pro 512GB which costs Rs.1,29,900, Rs.1,39,900 and Rs.1,59,900 respectively. That’s why this series of Smartphones is named as the costliest series of iPhones from Apple.

However, these are some countries where you can pay a visit only for the purpose of purchasing an iPhone and post return you will see that still your expense is less than the cost of an iPhone in India. Why is iPhone Expensive in India

The prime reason of iPhone being expensive in India is the service and duty charge. For your information, the service and duty charges in India is more than other countries. In India, 18 percent GST is imposed on Smartphones. Apart from Tax, weak currency is also a major reason for this. On an average, Indians pay Rs.25,000 as tax duty for any model of Apple. If this amount is removed from tax, then the beginning price of iPhone Mini will be around Rs.44,900. Being almost all models of iPhones are manufactured in India, so those are exempted from service tax. But as its parts are imported so 18 percent GST is imposed on them.

The beginning price of iPhone 13 128GB model in India is Rs 79,900, but its starting price in America is $799 (approx Rs.58,725 in India) which is the cheapest iPhone 13 price across the globe. Similarly, Canada is the second country where iPhone is cheapest. Here the beginning price of iPhone 13 is 1100 CAD (approx Rs.63,898).  Thailand is the third country in the race. In Thailand, its beginning price is 29,900 THB (approx Rs.66,109). Besides, the price of iPhone in other countries like China, Malaysia and Australia is also cheaper in India.
